A Large Inflatable Figure Is Installed In The Liceu To Symbolise The Dehumanisation Of Refugees And The Current Migration Crisis

In response to the current global migration crisis, Schellekens & Peleman have installed 'The Inflatable Refugee' at Barcelona's Liceu. This 6-meter-high inflatable figure symbolizes the dehumanization of refugees and the complexities of migration today. The installation will be showcased in the Salón de los Espejos from June 14 to 30.

The artwork contrasts the opulent opera house setting with the harsh realities faced by refugees, fostering reflection and dialogue on social issues through art. Made from the same fragile material as migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean, the figure highlights the vulnerability of those seeking asylum.

Previously exhibited in cities like Venice, Uppsala, Copenhagen, Mechelen, Ostend, Melbourne, and Breda, the 'Inflatable Refugee' aims to provoke critical commentary on contemporary events with humor and surrealism, according to Schellekens & Peleman.

This installation forms part of the broader "Liceu de les Arts" initiative led by Víctor Garcia de Gomar since 2019. It seeks to transform Liceu into an Arts Centre integrating diverse artistic disciplines alongside opera, aiming to provoke questions and symbolize societal issues in our constantly evolving world.
