Architect Proposes Cost-Effective Plan for Gasteig Renovation Amidst Budget Concerns

Architect Stephan Braunfels is calling for a rethink of the renovation. The city council is meeting to discuss how to proceed.

The renovation of the Gasteig in Munich is expected to cost 754 million GBP. It now appears that the work will drag on until 2035. In the Munich Abendzeitung, Stephan Braunfels, the architect of the Pinakothek der Moderne, has proposed a different plan.

Instead of demolishing the great hall, he wants to reduce the size of the current hall at a cost of 33 to 41 million GBP and optimise its acoustics. This could save 418 million GBP. At the same time, structural measures such as opening up the foyers with large glass windows and the glass ‘cultural stage’ would remain untouched.

The city is also currently debating a ‘partnering model’: the renovation is to be transferred to a subsidiary of the city – and it is to mobilise private investors. That would initially cost an additional 5 million GBP. The city council will vote on the plan.
