Vineta Sareika-Völkner, the first female concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, has announced her decision to leave the orchestra. Her departure will take place at the end of her contract in February 2025.

"After three enriching and exciting years with the Berliner Philharmoniker, I have decided to leave the orchestra," she shared on her Facebook page. Her final performances as concertmaster are scheduled for February 2025.

"We regret but respect her decision," said the orchestra board on Tuesday. The Latvian musician made history as the first woman to hold this prestigious position, starting in early 2023. "She will always have a special place in the history of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and we wish her all the best for the future," the board added.
