The Stuttgart State Opera's production of "Sancta" by Florentina Holzinger has sparked significant controversy due to its graphic content and provocative themes. Despite an 18+ rating and explicit warnings, the opera has led to 18 visitors seeking assistance, with three requiring medical attention due to feelings of nausea.

"Sancta" radically explores female bodies, painful stunts, violence, lesbian love, and critiques of Christian rituals and sexual oppression. Holzinger, an Austrian performance artist known for scandalous works, combines sexuality, spirituality, and religious criticism, pushing boundaries with depictions of blood, sexual acts, and religious violence.

The Stuttgart State Opera had issued warnings about the production’s intense content, advising it only for “daring” viewers. Despite the challenging nature of the performance, ticket demand surged following news coverage of the incidents, and all remaining shows sold out.
