Dutch National Opera Addresses Misconduct in ‘Fidelio’ Production

The Dutch National Opera has responded to a Het Parool article about guest director Andriy Zholdak, admitting to unacceptable behavior during the production of ‘Fidelio.’ The statement clarified that Zholdak's actions included impulsive and intimidating behavior, as well as physical contact without consent during rehearsals. Although Zholdak was only a guest director, the opera company took immediate action after a formal misconduct report was filed by an extra he inappropriately touched.

Following the incident, Zholdak was restricted from direct interactions with singers and required to apologize to affected staff. Despite conditions imposed on him, rehearsals resumed, but one artist chose to withdraw. An investigation was initiated but halted when the extra withdrew her cooperation. The company expressed regret that some felt unsafe due to Zholdak's methods, which do not align with its standards. The production ultimately received poor reviews upon opening.
