Minnesota Sinfonia Disbands After 35 Years: A Farewell to the People's Orchestra

Founded in 1989 by conductor Jay Fishman, the Minnesota Sinfonia comprised 26 freelance musicians, performing alongside award-winning guest soloists. Known as the "people's orchestra," it focused on improving access to classical music for students and low-income communities. After 35 years, the Sinfonia has disbanded due to financial difficulties.

The orchestra's final performances featured works by Prokofiev, Mozart, and Mendelssohn. Fishman, now 77, said financial problems that began around 2023 led to the decision to close, despite his efforts to secure funding. Foundations' support for the arts has waned, and the Sinfonia, with its commitment to free concerts, could not survive on limited fundraising.

A hallmark of the Sinfonia's outreach was its Music in the Schools program, which impacted over 175,000 students. Though the orchestra has disbanded, this program will continue through the 2024/25 academic year.

Fishman, reflecting on his decision to retire, noted the toll that running the orchestra had taken. "Physically and emotionally, I'm drained," he said, explaining that raising funds had become too difficult. After exploring a succession plan and potential mergers, Fishman and the board ultimately decided to close the orchestra to preserve its legacy.

As Fishman prepares for his final bow, he reflects with gratitude on a career spanning over 50 years. His plans now include composing and preserving the Sinfonia's musical scores for future generations. The orchestra's farewell concerts took place at First Covenant Church in St. Paul and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, marking the end of an era for the beloved Minnesota Sinfonia.
