Muti: Female Conductors Were Usually Better Than The Men

Recently, Riccardo Muti was interviewed by BR-KLASSIK, in the interview, he was asked about promoting young artists.

BR-KLASSIK: In addition to conducting, you have also focussed on promoting young artists in recent years. What are you currently most interested in apart from your work as a conductor?

Riccardo Muti: When you've been doing this for 40 or 50 years, you like to concentrate on a few orchestras, as I do now, and the BRSO is one of them. I also dedicate part of my time to the Academy for Young Conductors, which I founded a few years ago. I teach Italian opera because I am very critical of the way it is performed today. Incidentally, I have to say that in recent years, with a few exceptions, the female conductors have been much better than the men. That is my future, to teach young conductors that it is important not to forget: The conductor bears most of the responsibility.
