The Royal Swedish Opera has been fined 3 million krona, equivalent to 220,000 pounds, following the death of a stage technician who fell approximately 13 meters from a balcony while working in the opera house. According to AP News, an investigation revealed that the accident could have been prevented.
Prosecutor Jennie Nordin stated that the Royal Swedish Opera "had failed to investigate and assess the risk of the work in question" and "allowed the stage worker to perform the task despite the risk of falling over the railing." The employee, Petter Sundelin, died at the age of 57 on September 21 after the fall.
The tragic accident led the Royal Swedish Opera to cancel performances, including the original world premiere date of “Melancolia,” as the investigation proceeded.
