Daniele Gatti to be music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra?

The Hong Kong Philharmonic (HK Phil) has announced Daniele Gatti as 'artistic partner' for its 2024/2025 season, positioning him as the likely successor to Music Director Jaap van Zweden, who steps down at the end of June. Gatti will oversee the orchestra's programming and artistic direction, conducting three different symphonic programs in Hong Kong.

Jaap van Zweden will conduct his final concerts with the HK Phil on June 25 and 26, featuring works chosen by the public. After his tenure with HK Phil, van Zweden will lead the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France starting in 2025. He will also conduct several performances with HK Phil next season.

The upcoming season will feature other notable conductors such as Manfred Honeck, Pietari Inkinen, Paavo Järvi, Josep Pons, Tarmo Peltokoski, Vasily Petrenko, and Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat. Renowned soloists including Gautier Capuçon, Camille Thomas, Anna Fedorova, Daniel Lozakovich, and Jonas Kaufmann, who will debut with HK Phil in February 2025, will also perform. Daniele Gatti is set to conduct two concerts featuring works by Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner, and a recital by Japanese pianist Mao Fujita.
