The Diocese Of Buffalo Cancels Gay Men’s Chorus Concert

The Diocese of Buffalo canceled the Summer Choir Festival two weeks prior to the event, citing the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) as having "values inconsistent with Catholic teaching." Originally scheduled for June 9 at St. Joseph Cathedral, the festival will now take place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

In response, BGMC's artistic director, Dr. Rob Strauss, expressed disappointment, questioning if society had not progressed further by 2024. The BGMC has been promoting harmony and community pride through song since 2001.

Following the cancellation, St. Joseph Cathedral’s music director, Tim Socha, resigned after 17 years. The BGMC expressed their anger and disappointment on Facebook, highlighting the effort put into preparing for the event.

U.S. Congressman Tim Kennedy urged the diocese to reverse the decision in a letter to Bishop Michael Fisher, emphasizing the Catholic teaching of loving one's neighbor. However, a diocesan spokesperson confirmed that the decision stands. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church's Pastor Jeff Wilson welcomed the BGMC, stating that love transcends politics and that it is an honor to host the event.
