Czech record label Supraphon has now become part of Sony Music Entertainment (SME), as the global music giant further expands its footprint in the Central European market.
Founded in 1932, Supraphon boasts a rich catalog that spans pop, rock, classical music, and audiobooks, maintaining a significant presence in the Czech music industry for decades.
Sony Music Entertainment is one of the world’s three major record labels, ranking just behind Universal Music Group (UMG) and alongside Warner Music Group (WMG). Together, these three industry giants control 70% of the global music market, with Sony Music holding over a 22% share.
Following the acquisition, Supraphon will retain its current management team. Libor Holeček will continue as CEO, while Martin Kudla will remain as Executive Director. Former Chairwoman of the Board, Iva Milerová, will take on an advisory role. The transaction was completed by Sony Music Entertainment, acquiring Supraphon from its previous owners, Zdeněk Kozák and Miloš Petana, though the purchase price has not been disclosed.
Daniel Lieberberg, President of Sony Music Entertainment Europe & Africa, stated: “Supraphon is a cornerstone of Czech musical heritage, with an invaluable catalog and a strong commitment to supporting Czech and Slovak talent. This vision aligns perfectly with Sony Music’s mission to nurture and develop artists.”
