Challenges and Changes: Moscow's New Passport-Based Ticketing System

In October 2024, the Bolshoi Theater and Vakhtangov Theater in Moscow transitioned to a passport-based ticketing system, requiring patrons to present identification when purchasing tickets. This system aims to combat ticket scalping, especially for popular performances.

Many users, however, have encountered significant challenges. For example, Elena Shlegel struggled to buy tickets to popular shows, facing website crashes and limited seat selection. Alexandra Khmurkovskaya reported persistent technical issues that made ticket purchasing frustrating and time-consuming.

The Ministry of Culture indicated that only four of the 22 federal theaters have implemented personalized ticket sales to address high demand and discourage resellers. While some theaters have begun this practice to maintain affordable ticket prices, others, like the Mariinsky Theater and Lenkom, do not plan to adopt such measures.

Despite assurances regarding personal data security, some users noted they were required to provide detailed identification information during the purchase process, raising concerns about data protection.

The system is still in its early stages, with ongoing adjustments needed to improve user experience and ensure fair access to theater tickets.
