Malmö Symphony Orchestra Unveils Innovative Cello Concerto Featuring Robot Performer

The Malmö Symphony Orchestra recently premiered "Veer (bot)," a new cello concerto by Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad, featuring a robot-cello played by industrial robotic arms and 3D-printed components. Designed by composer Fredrik Gran, the robot aims to explore the musical potential of mechanical processes, reflecting the electro-acoustic techniques of mid-20th-century avant-garde composers.

Mühlrad emphasizes that robotics in performance complements human creativity rather than replacing it. His work has been showcased at prominent venues, including Carnegie Hall and Bamberg Hall, and he has collaborated with a variety of artists across genres.

Expressing gratitude on social media, Mühlrad likened composing to crafting a script, with the performance bringing that script to life in a deeply meaningful way.
