Vienna Marathon Opens with Record-Breaking Waltz Celebrating Strauss Bicentennial

On April 6, 2025, the 42nd Vienna City Marathon commenced with a spectacular waltz performance to honor the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss. Over 2,025 couples danced to “The Blue Danube” in front of the Reichsbrücke, successfully setting a new world record for the largest waltz dance. Led by dance professional Thomas Kraml, this event beautifully merged Vienna’s rich musical heritage with its sporting spirit.

Kathrin Widu, Managing Director of the Vienna City Marathon, remarked, “As a marathon in the city of music, we combine running with the world-famous sounds of Johann Strauss and create experiences that can only be found here.”

This year’s marathon saw a record-breaking participation of over 45,000 runners, encompassing full and half marathons, relay races, and more, showcasing Vienna’s vibrant cultural and athletic scene.
